A performance node collects, stores, and analyzes network performance data; this helps identify changes in network performance and assists troubleshooters in quickly resolving problems that might be misconstrued as a faulty or broken network. It also provides both a network diagnostic end-point for testing and a storage facility for the results of active measurements (i.e., latency and bandwidth). This long-term storage allows troubleshooters to check historical data gathered from the regular testing and compare it to observed performance when diagnosing a network performance problem.

The Internet2 Performance Node: Live CD offers a minimally configured way of delivering the powerful software components of a Performance Node through a simple live Linux-based installation and management CD. Users can easily create a Performance Node to provide local network diagnostics and access the international perfSONAR federation of available performance data.

Internet2, ESnet, Infinera, Juniper Networks and Level 3 Communications have formed a joint development effort to aggressively develop and test emerging 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) technologies. The initiative will build on fresh-from-the-laboratory technologies to create a 100 GbE testbed on the Internet2 and ESnet networks, with an operational network capability soon thereafter.

Internet2 and Internet2 members are participating in SC08, the annual High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis conference, taking place 15-21 November in Austin, Texas. Internet2 is collaborating with the SCinet committee, in partnership with LEARN and its members in Texas, to support the networking requirements of participants and exhibitors at SC08, including connectivity to the Internet2 Dynamic Circuit Network. Internet2, together with partners and members, will demonstrate dynamic circuit networking and network performance technologies, and highlight support for network research.

It will then explore the technical requirements for running these applications over the IP network and discuss the mechanisms for delivering high-quality audio and video over IP.

The Large Hadron Collider provides a massive facility for physicists around the world to investigate the origins of the universe. The world’s largest scientific research project is expected to produce roughly 15 petabytes of data annually for analysis. The Call for Nominations for candidates to serve on the Internet2 Board of Trustees and the Internet2 Advisory Councils is now open. The Internet2 Board currently has 4 openings, and the Advisory Councils each have one opening per constituency. Internet2 is also seeking nominations for community representation on the Governance & Nominations Committee. Nominations will be accepted until November 21. The election will take place in February 2009.

The reach of the Internet2 Network has been expanded!  A dedicated R&E connection to Pakistan is now available. This new connectivity will enable Pakistani scientists from 60 universities and institutes, linked via the Pakistan Education Research Network (PERN), to collaborate with their international peers across the globe.  The link was put in place with support from the NSF-funded TransPAC2 project, the Higher Education Commission (HEC) in Pakistan, and the EC-funded TEIN2 network.  Further details can be found here.

This new connection between Pakistan and the United States was “inaugurated” during the Internet2 Emerging National Research & Education Network (NREN) Special Interest Group (SIG) at the Fall 2008 Internet2 Member Meeting held in New Orleans, Louisiana.  Representatives from three sites in Pakistan - the HEC, the National Centre for Physics in Islamabad, and NWFP University of Engineering & Technology in Peshawar, participated remotely in the meeting. Virtual participants from Pakistan were joined by those from several other countries, including Trinidad and Tobago, Chile, Ecuador, Egypt, India, Palestine, and Sweden.

The Internet2 Dynamic Circuit Networking (DCN) working group examines uses of DCN technology, provides guidance on its development, and shares best practices and expectations for Internet2 Network connectors and campuses. The WG's current focus is on the Internet2 DCN pilot service, including business models, operations, and usage policy. Join the DCN WG to help shape the future of the Internet2 DCN service.

At the Fall 2008 Internet2 Member Meeting, there will be a number of forums for discussion of the Strategic Plan implementation framework. On 14 October, the SPEC will host focus groups for community input. Additionally, executive liaisons will have the opportunity to discuss the Strategic Plan as part of the Community Leaders Forum. Finally, there will be a Strategic Plan implementation presentation at the third General Session, held on 16 October.

David Lambert is the vice president for Information Services and chief information officer at Georgetown University.  He serves as vice-chair of the Internet2 External Relations Advisory Council. Under David's direction, Georgetown has taken an active role in regional technology activities such as the Mid-Atlantic Crossroads (MAX), as well as national higher education technology initiatives such as Internet2.

The Strategic Planning and Execution Committee has developed a document that outlines a lightweight framework for implementing the Strategic Plan.  The implementation process is consistent with the interplay between Internet2 staff and governance used throughout the strategic planning process, and incorporates efforts of numerous groups already at work in the related communities.  Please review this document in advance of the Fall 2008 Internet2 Member Meeting, where there will be numerous opportunities for discussion.

September 10 marked the first-ever success in circulating a beam of subtomic particles around the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. When LHC experiments begin in October 2008, terabytes of data will flow over networks such as Internet2 to thousands of researchers around the globe, including over 1700 in the United States.

Ray Ford is a professor of Computer Science and the chief information & technology officer at The University of Montana.  He serves as chair of the Internet2 Applications, Middleware, and Services Advisory Council, co-chair of the Strategic Planning Execution Committee, and on the Internet2 Board of Trustees.  Previously he served on Internet2’s Network Policy & Planning Advisory Council and Campus Expectations Task Force, and is the past chair of the Northern Tier Networking Consortium.

Internet2 has partnered with the 100x100 Clean Slate Project to provide dedicated nationwide network facilities that will enable researchers to re-examine the basic building blocks of the Internet. Utilizing this national testbed network designed by Rice University and Stanford University, project researchers will work to develop new networking technologies that aim to address the Internet's current challenges including scalability, security, and access.

perfSONAR is an infrastructure for network performance monitoring involving an international consortium of organizations. Deployment of the perfSONAR architecture/tools is worldwide, including but not limited to ESnet, GEANT2, Internet2 and RNP.

Internet2 is pleased to be a participant in APAN 26: Sustainable Networking held in Queenstown, New Zealand 4-8 August, 2008. This event will feature a half-day workshop designed to showcase the purpose, benefits, and required resources of the perfSONAR framework when used for measuremet and monitoring across R&E networks. The global impact of performance problems and the methodology that leads to faster solutions will be demonstrated using presentations and real-life examples of monitoring on the networks of current perfSONAR participants. In keeping with the theme of the conference, the collaborative nature of perfSONAR will be highlighted, with special focus placed on the reduced time and resources required to solve cross-domain performance issues and how this advantage directly translates into environmental and operational sustainability.

George Loftus is the executive director of OSHEAN, Inc., which serves Rhode Island's institutions of higher education and members in the health care and K-12 communities. He is also the chairman and president of the Northeast Research & Education Network. At its July 8 meeting, the Internet2 Board voted to adopt the Strategic Plan. Now that the plan has been formally approved, the Internet2 Strategic Planning and Execution Committee (SPEC) looks forward to working with members, partners, staff and management to move Internet2 into the implementation stage. As a part of this process, the Advisory Councils will soon identify working teams to coordinate with Internet2 staff on developing plan tasks.

The Internet2 SPEC released a new version of the Strategic Plan, which is being submitted for discussion and adoption by the Internet2 Board at its 8 July meeting. This revised document incorporates substantial comments, insights and suggestions received during extensive consultation with Internet2 members and Board. A “town meeting” is being planned with the community to discuss the transition from strategy to execution.
